Suzani

HISTORY OF THE SUZANI
Suzani ( Persian SUZAN = NEEDLE ) is one of the most attractive and beautiful products of Uzbekistan’s handi-craft culture. They are usually large silk and/or cotton embroideries, traditionally used to to decorate interiors of the houses.

Suzanis were also an important part of a girl’s dowry.

Each region in Uzbekistan has had their own design pool and style. Tashkent ones are far different from the Bukhara ones or Shahr-i Sabz ones. The Uzbeki embroidered Suzanis for different utilitarian purposes, as coverlets for the small tables, bedcovers stacked into the niches during the day, etc.
